Cogeneration
– also known as “combined heat and power” (CHP)
– is the generation of both electrical and thermal power
from the same energy source. This is possible because the process
of generating electrical power from fuel creates heat as a byproduct.
This heat is captured and used to provide heating and/or chilling.
With cogeneration,
efficiencies far in excess of utility provided power are obtained
– as high as 85% combined efficiencies. Stated another way,
cogeneration can reduce the true power consumption of a facility
by 20 to 40%. In addition to being efficient and economical, cogeneration
is environmentally friendly, and provides a source quality power.
